Ever since I can remember, I've found beautiful things a joy to draw and paint. I am especially drawn to painting nature with its various colors, forms and textures while also concentrating on the human face and figure. I see painting as a way of exploring the world and then translating those discoveries into something that can be shared with others. It’s like putting a spotlight on something I want people to see.
Many of my paintings are done on cracked plaster. A lot of people ask why I go through all the trouble of making my own surface and I tell them there are two reasons. One, the plaster affords me the opportunity to add texture to my work and allows for experimentation with the watercolor I apply. The cracked surface allows for random forms to show up when painted, something I as a perfectionist find incredibly freeing. I then apply encaustic wax to harden the surface. Sometimes the art is done at that point and at other times I go beyond by painting on it with pigmented wax or oil.
And two, as a Christian, I believe what God says in the Bible about the world and His creation being marred by sin. Because of sin in ourselves and in all creation, there is imperfection. I show this with a surface that is cracked. Even though the painting itself expresses beauty, there is imperfection underneath.
